چکیده
We present a detailed theoretical and experimental study of the evanescent coupled optical microcavity modes in one-dimensional photonic bandgap structures. The coupled-cavity samples are fabricated by depositing alternating hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride and silicon oxide layers. Splitting of the eigenmodes and formation of a defect band due to interaction between the neighbouring localized cavity modes are experimentally observed. Corresponding field patterns and the transmission spectra are obtained by using transfer matrix method (TMM) simulations. A theoretical model based on the classical wave analogue of the tight-binding (TB) picture is developed and applied to these structures. Experimental results are in good agreement with the predictions of the TB approximation and the TMM simulations.

Tunable photonic bandgap structures for optical interconnects
As continued progress towards faster, low power consuming microelectronic devices becomes increasing difficult due to the scaling challenges of electrical interconnects, it becomes even more critical to explore alternative technologies. Tunable porous silicon photonic bandgap structures are viable building blocks for optical interconnects, which present a possible long term solution to the inte...
متن کاملThermal tuning of silicon-based one-dimensional photonic bandgap structures
Thermal tuning of silicon-based one-dimensional photonic bandgap microcavities is demonstrated. Thermally induced spectral shifts are caused by both the host silicon matrix and the optically active material infiltrated inside the photonic bandgap structures. The active material leads to the dominant thermal tuning contribution but the effect of the silicon matrix cannot be neglected. The intera...
متن کاملFinite-difference time-domain modeling of dispersive-material photonic bandgap structures
Photonic bandgap (PBG) structures constructed from lossy, dispersive dielectric and metallic materials are characterized in terms of their reflection and transmission properties. Particular emphasis is given to PBG structures with defects. These PBG structures are modeled analytically with an ABCD matrix method for their single-frequency response. They also are modeled numerically with a finite...

We have microfabricated two-dimensional ~2D! photonic band gap structures in a thin slab of dielectric material to define reflectors and high-Q microresonators. By selectively omitting holes from the 2D photonic crystal, optical microcavities, and in-plane microresonator switches can be defined. We have designed this structure with a finite difference time domain approach, and demonstrate the e...
